October Book Club: The Tattooist Of Auschwitz

Natalie Langston

BY:

Well I cannot believe it is already October and the leaves are changing and so is my body as I fully embrace the halfway point of my last trimester. I am finding myself having to do less and rest more which is really a challenge for me when boredom sets in. So when I picked up this month’s Indigo novel The Tattooist Of Auschwitz I think it may have been my fastest read to date and a story that will stay with me for a long time.

This novel- written by Heather Morris- is based on an incredible true story of a man named Lale Sokolov and the woman who he meets at Auschwitz, both Slovakian Jewish prisoners there, named Gita. When imprisoned Lale becomes the tattooist, the Tätowierer, for both Auschwitz (the original concentration camp) and Birkenau (a combined concentration/extermination camp). This is due to his ability to speak several languages which sets him apart from the other prisoners. He meets Gita when she is in line to be tattooed by him, memorizes her number and falls in love with her immediately. Because of his employment as the tattooist at the camp, Lale is given much more freedom and is able to move around more as well as given better housing and access to food. He uses his privilege to help keep the other prisoners alive by sneaking them food and medicines. His love for Gita grows stronger but some of his reckless decisions put both of their lives in great danger.

Morris shows the horrors of life as a prisoner of war but also shows how love and hope can be stronger than anything else. A reminder as to how tragic life can be for some people and to be grateful for what you have and that love knows no bounds. This is the perfect book to settle in with during these cold nights in front of the fire, trust me it will be hard to put down.
