Festival season is in full-swing across the country. With huge crowds camping out for days at a time, and limited access to washroom facilities it’s essential to make a few ‘alterations‘ to our regular maintenance routine. That’s why I’m working with John Frieda® Canada to give you the right products and tips, for a weekend’s worth of social media snaps to keep your #TBT roster rolling through Thanksgiving.
Normally, I use the John Frieda® Sheer Blonde® Go Blonder line during the year, especially to renew my colour when I’m tight on time and can’t make my regular salon appointments. But festivals are a different beast and call for a little extra cleanse.
The evening before the festival, wash your hair with John Frieda® Bleach Blonde® Cool Dip® Purifying Shampoo, not just for blondes. This shampoo is the perfect style prep because it adds a beautiful beach-worthy texture, seriously reducing the amount of post shampoo styling products required. When it comes to making a wash last a long time, it’s all about how you add and build products in your hair. If you use too many styling products too early you will weigh your hair down and cause a build-up of oil. Greasy hair is not Instagram worthy.
Follow your shampoo with the Beach Blonde® Smooth Seas® Detangling Conditioner, the lightweight conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down and seems to strike that perfect balance of conditioned yet still texturizing hair. A rich conditioner can be too heavy for fine hair, weighing it down and preventing you from creating style.
When you step out of the shower, towel dry your hair and apply John Frieda® Luxurious Volume® Core Restore® Advanced Protein Volumizer. I used this to add some extra volume! Section your hair and round brush blow dry, creating as much volume at the crown as possible!
When you wake up on festival morning I can guarantee you’ll be happy that you don’t have to spend over an hour washing and prepping your hair—you are welcome! When it’s a travel day, I prefer to wear something casual—my hair is usually at its best this day so I don’t feel overly casual in high-rise comfy shorts and a light, linen detailed tank. Pack your bags, pick up your bestie, hit the road and press play!
When you arrive at the festival, your hair will be voluminous with that perfect amount of bounce and wave that can only come from a great blow-out! If you feel a little disheveled from the open sunroof, give your hair a light (and I mean super light!) misting of John Frieda® Frizz Ease® Moisture Barrier Flexible Hold hairspray and gently coax your hair back into place. The superfine mist is perfect for taming a few strays without falling heavy on your scalp.
While a good blow out can definitely make you feel like a model, do your best not to touch your hair—you don’t want to make your hair dirtier or greasier than it needs to be this early in the game!
Your hair is definitely not as lustrous as it was the day before, so we start to build with styling products. I personally like to add a light salt spray like John Frieda® Beach Blonde® Sea Waves® Sea Salt Spray from mid shaft down. If your roots aren’t bad and you still have some top volume, you don’t need to add anything like dry shampoo just yet. I like the sea salt spray because it gives hair more texture and as it dries, added volume. Once I’ve sprayed my hair, I gently style into a half up/half down with fishtail braid. I add a few flowers for a subtle flower crown and pair it with my favourite flowy print dress. It’s a sexy beachy look that pulls hair away from your face and the loose dress gives you that right amount of sway —perfect for dancing!
It’s officially time to break out the John Frieda® Luxurious Volume® Volume Refresh Dry Shampoo! Section your hair and dust the areas that gather the most oil. Usually the hairline around the face, the part and the crown. Don’t overdo it! From here I like to separate my hair into two sections with a straight part and create a look with two French braids. It’s a super cute look that has a little edge to it! When I wear my hair on the edgier side, I try to contrast my outfit to be a little ‘sweeter’. Here I’ve paired my braids with a light chambray button down dress. It’s easy, light and perfectly durable for bumping into strangers in front of the main stage!
The last day of festival is usually the hardest—you’ve had a great time you don’t really want to go but you also REALLY want a proper shower. For the last day I really love doing a Milkmaid braid. You have enough product already in your hair and a crazy amount of curl/frizz from yesterday’s twin French braids. A Milkmaid braid is a great way to tame it! If you need a little more Dry Shampoo, add sparingly, then start at your hairline and start braiding around—pulling in new pieces each time. Secure with bobby pins and give it a spray of John Frieda® Luxurious Volume® Forever Full® All Day Hold Hairspray. This carefree look already adds so much style you can wear with anything light and easy—nothing too overdone that competes with your look. I’ve paired mine with a nice loose shift dress. It’s comfortable for the long haul home and the milkmaid braid lets you drive home with all the windows down without your hair tangling in the wind! And trust me, you’ll want the windows rolled down!
When you get home, be sure to gently wash your hair with a good cleansing shampoo and follow up with your regular routine. I start with a good cleanse using the John Frieda® Bleach Blonde® Cool Dip® Purifying Shampoo to get rid of the product build up and continue with the John Frieda® Frizz Ease® Miraculous Recovery® Shampoo and Conditioner. From there, give your hair a break from tools and elastics by running John Frieda® Frizz Ease® Dream Curls® Daily Styling Spray through towel dried hair. Your hair will feel clean and most importantly you’ll be able to wake up with a fresh style ready to face the work week!

No festival plans unfortunately, but we made it to a few local concerts celebrating Canada’s 150th 🙂 @jdanielscott
Unfortunately, there aren`t many festivals here in my small town and area. We do have our “town day” early in August, with games, music,FOOD,a dance and fireworks,.so I will be going to that! 🙂
I`m guessing we have to tag on instagram? I will go there now! 🙂
You’re our winner!! Congratulations!
Please e-mail me at email@example.com to get your prize!
Had hoped to check out the Vancouver Folk Festival, but didnt make it. 🙁
I had phoned a few month ago to find out why I could not buy any of your gold blond hair colour in Canada. You had no answer for me. I was told by a few of my normal supplier that this product has been taken off the shelves. They did not know why.
Until that time I was very happy with your product, but now I do not think that I will continue with this, because I have no faith in a company that has no explanation, why their products were no longer available.
I enjoyed a very Happy Birthday Canada here in Kelowna, B.C. It was a beautiful celebration.
We have a festival in town fireworks, dance and lots of games. So I will be attending that. @tammykayv on instagram.
