A Heartfelt Thanksgiving: Embracing Gratitude and Reflection

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favourite times of the year. There’s something magical about the crispness in the air and the vibrant tapestry of falling leaves that signals the start of a cozy season. This time of year always feels like a fresh start, fueling my excitement and energy for new projects. As I sit down to write this blog, I am filled with gratitude and reflection. However, this Thanksgiving carries an even deeper meaning for me, one that involves learning and unlearning the history of this day.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a celebration of harvest and blessings. Yet, it’s essential to acknowledge the hospitality and generosity of the Indigenous people, specifically the Mi’Kmaq, who taught settlers about the land and resources in 1606. The settlers’ survival and subsequent generations owe much to these lessons. Unfortunately, the relationship between Indigenous people and settlers deteriorated, leading to tragic events like King Phillip’s War. Learning about this history, thanks to Kathleen from Nine Rising, has been eye-opening and disheartening. It reminds me of the importance of supporting and celebrating the Indigenous community, a commitment I’m making by donating to the Native Women’s Association of Canada this Thanksgiving.

1. My Boys

One of the greatest joys in my life is my family, especially my three boys. Our newest addition arrived in April, and I couldn’t be more in love. Each of them has taught me so much about motherhood, touching my soul in ways I never imagined. Yes, I’m exhausted—six years without a full night’s sleep can do that—but I’m also incredibly fulfilled and at peace. Watching their personalities blossom is a daily delight, and I’m looking forward to spending this Thanksgiving weekend with them, truly present and grateful.

2. Gary

I owe much of my happiness to Gary, my partner in this beautiful journey. Our relationship, like any, has its ups and downs, but we’re in a good place now. We truly feel like a team, supporting and leaning on each other. It’s heartwarming to see the love our boys have for their dad, and I cherish watching Gary grow into his role as their father.

3. My Family

Family is everything to me, and I’m so grateful for the support of mine. My mom and sister are my best friends, and I count my blessings every day to have them by my side. My extended family, including my stepdad and in-laws, enrich our lives, and I’m thankful my boys are surrounded by so much love. I dream of the day my sister and cousins have children, so they can all grow up together as we did.

In addition to my family, I cherish my friends who feel like family. They are the ones who stand by me through thick and thin, sharing in our joys and sorrows. Their unwavering support and love create a bond that makes life even more meaningful. I truly believe that family can be found in the hearts of those we choose to surround ourselves with.

4. My Career

Being able to balance motherhood with a flexible career is something I am incredibly thankful for. My work in media, TV, and content creation is my passion. Even though I’m home more right now, I cherish the opportunities to appear on morning shows and connect with like-minded, driven individuals. I’m excited to expand my business, highlight small Canadian businesses, and give back to my community.

5. Being Canadian

In a world often troubled by conflict and disaster, I am profoundly grateful to be Canadian. Our beautiful country, particularly British Columbia, is a place of freedom and peace, and I feel privileged to raise my family here. Returning home from travels always fills me with gratitude for the safety and beauty of our province.

Thanksgiving is a time to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives. It’s also an opportunity to learn and grow, acknowledging the truths of our history and committing to a future that honours all voices. As I celebrate with my family, I’m filled with gratitude for the love and opportunities in my life, and I look forward to the new beginnings this season promises. What are you most grateful for this Thanksgiving? How do you plan to honour and support the communities that have shaped your life? Share your thoughts and let’s continue this conversation of gratitude and growth together!
